Detailed itinerary (3 days)

Day 1: Pontarlier - Mouthe

Itinerary start: Rendezvous on the first day is at 9am at Pontarlier SNCF railway station.

On request we can book the previous night's accommodation for you in Pontarlier.

Welcome to the land of the Green Fairy! The town of Pontarlier was the Absinthe capital in the 1920's. Pontarlier is a dynamic, tourist town on the border with Switzerland, boasting a rich past and history… For mountain bikers it's the gateway to a great area for riding! An unusual beast lives in the woods around the village of Vaux et Chantegrue: the "sanglier" (wild boar)… However, this one walks on two legs, talks, and sings! The “sanglier” is the name given to craftsmen who cut strips of spruce pine bark, which are then wrapped around the famous "Mont d'Or" cheese, giving it its unique flavour! Today’s route takes us towards the Lake Remoray Nature Reserve where we discover two lakes, with the Mont d'Or (1465 m) in the background. We finish the day in the village of Mouthe.

Distance covered: approx. 50 km / Ascent: 1000 m

Day 2: Mouthe - Métabief

We've got a great day of riding ahead of us. We take a last opportunity to appreciate the two lakes before we begin a climb to ride the Mont d'Or ridgelines. The alpine meadows are home to chamois and wallcreeper birds (Tichodroma), which we may be lucky enough to spot... The end of the day sees us tackle a 400 metre descent from the mountains to the town of Métabief on the downhill course that saw Nicolas Vouilloz become world champion. Welcome to Métabief!

Distance covered: approx. 30 km / Ascent: 1000 m

Day 3: Métabief - Pontarlier

The beginning of the day’s ride sees us visit the village of Fourgs, high up in the Haut Doubs at 1100 metres above sea level, offering superb views of the surrounding Alps. We make a brief visit into Switzerland, where we discover an impressive peat bog that has collapsed into the earth. Our route then takes us through the narrow passage of the Château de Joux and Fort Malher, strategically placed to defend the area during the Middle Ages, before tackling a final descent that marks the end of our trip in Pontarlier.

Distance covered: approx. 40 km / Altitude gain: 500 m

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Itinerary end: Separation on the last day is at Pontarlier SNCF railway station at around 4pm.

On request we can book the following night's accommodation for you in Pontarlier.

Detailed itinerary (4 days)

Day 1: Pontarlier - Le Chauffaud

Itinerary start: Rendezvous on the first day is at 9am at Pontarlier SNCF railway station.

On request we can book the previous night's accommodation for you in Pontarlier.

Leaving Pontarlier, we pass the Gallo Roman theatre, before heading into the vast forests of the Haut-Doubs. In the Vallée du Doubs, we make our way through some superb alpine prairies with views of the Doubs River, before leaving the Montagne du Larmont and heading towards the Rocher du Cerfs des Gras, overlooking the famous République du Saugeis… Our route takes us on to the Val de Morteau and our overnight stop in Le Chauffaud.

Distance covered: 45km / Altitude gain: 700m

Day 2: Le Chauffaud - Saut du Doubs - Le Chauffaud

We leave our gite for the day and head off to explore the deep gorges of the Saut du Doubs. On the border between France and Switzerland, we alternate riding on the left and right bank, mixing fun singletrack with sections of forest tracks. A short climb offers us views of the Doubs plains below, before we head to the Barrage du Chatelot, then on to the Saut du Doubs, a 33 metre high waterfall that marks the French-Swiss border. The first half of the day offers a fair amount of descending, but the afternoon finishes with a big climb. Fortunately our accommodation and welcome refreshment awaits us at the end of the day!

Distance covered: 45km / Altitude gain: 1100m

Day 3: Le Chauffaud - La Roche - Les Fourgs

Today it's time to go and do some riding over the Swiss border ! A short climb takes us into Switzerland, and if the skies are clear offers us magical views of the northern Alps and the Neuchâtel Lake. Our route takes us along the pretty Lac des Taillères, then on to the summit of the Chasseron. We climb the Côte aux Fées before passing back into France at the village of Fourgs. The village becomes a hive of activity in winter as soon as the first snows arrive : downhill skiers, cross-country skiers dog sledders, and snowshoe walkers abound. Today's stage is the longest of the tour, but the distance is more than made up for by some superb scenery and views, as well as opportunities to discover the local culture.

Distance covered: 50km / Altitude gain: 1000m

Day 4: Les Fourgs - Pontarlier

A final stage along the shores of the Lac de Malbuisson on a fairly technical route which offers the chance to evaluate the progress made over the course of the 4 days. Our route then takes us through the narrow passage of the Château de Joux and the Fort Mahler, strategically placed to defend the area during the Middle Ages, before we tackle a final descent to Pontarlier and a well deserved aperitif…

Distance covered: 45km / Altitude gain: 800m

Distances and altitude gain are an indication only and may vary.

Itinerary end: Separation on the last day is at Pontarlier SNCF railway station at around 4pm.

On request we can book the following night's accommodation for you in Pontarlier.

Travel Insurance

It is important to be correctly insured when embarking on a cycling holiday. We recommend checking the details of your travel insurance (if you have one) and, if necessary, subscribing to our contract below. Please note that France Bike Trips is simply an intermediary between you and the insurance company.

You can choose between these travel insurance contracts while completing your booking form:

  • I subscribe to the "comprehensive multi-risk" insurance cover (4.5%), minimum premium of 15 €:
This contract covers assistance, repatriation, lost or stolen luggage, holiday interruption and cancellation. To see the full contract, click here.
  • I purchase the "cancellation only" insurance cover (2.5%), minimum premium of 10 €:
This policy covers cancellation only. To see the full contract, click here.
  • I purchase the "repatriation & assistance" insurance cover (1.6%), minimum premium of 10 €:
This policy covers assistance, repatriation, lost or stolen luggage and holiday interruption. To see the full contract, click here.

Important note: Our insurance contract is only valid for persons with a permanent residence in Europe. The “liability insurance abroad” included in the contracts is only valid for persons with a permanent residence in France. Details can be found in the policy booklet (see below).

If you subscribe to one of the contracts, the insurance policy will be available on your France Bike Trips customer account.

Recommendation:
If you choose to take out a travel insurance policy with another insurance company, please check that the search and rescue coverage is suitable: area covered, expenses included, risks covered (as an indication, a minimum cover of 15 000 € is recommended). Please note that credit card insurance rarely offers this type of coverage.

Health

We strongly recommend having a medical check-up before your holiday.

Our / Your state of mind

- A "group" tour: If you join a guided tour, you will be part of a group for several days. This is a superb opportunity to meet new people and share some magical moments. However, a group tour requires that each person show friendliness, openness and mutual respect for their fellow travellers.

- An "adventure" tour: despite the most careful preparation, adventure tours can present unforeseen events. Accepting these risks will help you enjoy your trip to the full, in the knowledge that your guide, our local partners and the entire France Bike Trips team will offer you the most suitable solutions to any given situation.

Bike and plane / train

If you decide to bring your own bike, be aware that transporting a bike by plane or train is no longer an issue. However a few simple guidelines help to optimise the transport and avoid potential damages that could occur.
Your bike must be transported in a designated bike bag (standard size 120x90cm). This maximal size allows you to travel with your bike as "hand luggage" in any TGV and SNCF trains.
It is very important that you protect your bike in the bag. After having deflated the tires, removed the wheels (by removing the quick release mechanisms), pedals and rear derailleur (which is left hanging on the chain), we recommend you wrap your bike inside the bag in a sheet of dense foam (thickness of 3 to 5 cm). A piece of cardboard or rigid plastic positioned between the foam and the inside of the cover can be beneficial to provide more rigidity.

Once folded up the bike bag will take up very little space and will be transported by the assistance vehicle during your tour.

Bike bags are available directly from France Bike Trips at a cost of 70 euros, plus postage.

Option analogue maps

We offer digital map material with highlighted tracks for our self-guided tours by default. These are printable (A4, pdf format). On request, we can provide you with analogue maps containing the highlighted itinerary and route infos (official French maps at a scale of
1:25,000). Shipment will be made to the accommodation of your extra night before the tour.

Price of this option incl. shipping within France: see above

Please let us know in the booking form if you would like this option. Please also give us an accommodation address for shipping if you do not
book an extra night through us before the tour.

GPS tracks

If you choose to book a self-guided tour, we provide the GPS tracks of the route. You will be able to download the GPX type files from your France Bike Trips user account once you receive our travel documents by email. They are compatible with all current GPS software applications and editors.

Accuracy

These tracks have been created using professional mapping software. There may be slight differences between the GPS track and the reality on the terrain. The GPS tracks should thus be considered a "plus" to help you find your way. However, they are by no means a substitute for orientation with the help of the highlighted map material.

The distances and altitude gain in the tour's programme remain the reference. Indeed, real-world altitude and mileages can be different and vary significantly from the data shown in GPS software applications.

Data privacy

We ask you not to publish these GPS tracks on any website, social network or anywhere else. Their elaboration required many hours of hard work, both to create the track in the field, but also in our software applications. The non-respect of this ethic would force us to remove these valuable tool from our offer.
